September 2007

MEMBERSHIP

VVA Chapter 96's membership has increased by 40% since March of 2007, and that's good.  That's good.  That's very good.  But another 40% increase above the number of members we have now would be necessary, to get us back to where our membership numbers were 10 or 15 years ago.

I look at it like this though... as decrepit as some of us are getting, it might take four times as many members to get half as much done as we did 15 years or so ago.  Back then, Chapter 96's members were busy as beavers, carrying out chapter projects almost without number.  That old saying, that "many hands make light work"... well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but we had a lot of people pitching in a lot of different ways, and we had a lot of projects going.  I don't know that we can get back to THAT level of activity again, but I do feel that we can do a lot better than we have done lately and a lot better than we are doing right now.

Bradley's Country Fun Day is coming up soon... November 17th... and we have already started getting permits and licenses and such for Springtime Tallahassee, coming up on March 29th, 2008.  Those are our usual two big fundraisers each year.  In addition, there has been some discussion and planning towards participating in Mule Day for the first time this year... but uh-oh, it's on only about 6 weeks from now, on November 3rd, two weeks before Bradley's, and we aren't ready for it!

So... we can use some help getting those fundraisers taken care of.  And maybe we can recruit some new members at the fundraisers... maybe even some new members with new ideas for projects for the chapter, and to help spread the workload so us old fogeys don't get to bowed down by the weight.

But any way I look at it, whether helping with what is already going on, or expanding into new and better projects, Chapter 96 needs to increase its both its activity level and its membership.  So, from now through the foreseeable future, expect to see a membership application form in each issue of the Free Fire Wire.  And it's not there just to add volume to your household recycling bin!  Think about those Vietnam veterans you know who are eligible but aren't currently members.  Twist their arms.  Tell them that's allright, that I said to do it!

UPCOMING CHAPTER MEMBER MEETINGS

September 20, 2007        -        October 18, 2007      -      November 15, 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hootch status.  All repairs from damage caused by the large water oak limb have been repaired.  I’d like to thank Ken Ganey and John Petriello for helping.  Streamline Roofing was also prompt in doing their part.  Thanks to all involved.

The Hootch will need some beautification before our 20 year anniversary celebration.  Soon after the first of the year we’ll start the process of repainting inside and out.  I’d like to see both bathroom floors replaced along with the kitchen floor in tile if possible.  If any of our members has these skills, contact me.

There have been several Hootch rentals.  Narcotics Anonymous came to the Board and ask about using the Hootch routinely again.  The Board agreed in the best interest of the community to welcome them back.  They will start meeting this coming week.

Bradley’s Fun Day is November 17th.  It’s one of our major fund raisers.  Please sign up to help.

Boe Boeve is back up and running (ah walking) after knee replacement surgery.

If there is something that the Chapter can do for any of its members or extended families contact anyone on the board.

Hope to see you at our next meeting, this Thursday, September 20th.
Lest we forget.
