APALACHICOLA DEDICATION: JULY 12, 2008

About Three Soldiers, Detail Statue

Three Soldiers, bronze, is part of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington D.C. (1982- 1984) Along with The Wall, this monument serves as a symbol of our nation's honor and recognition of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War. This monumental figurative work of soldiers speaks to what Frederick Hart called "their true heroism that lies in the bonds of loyalty". It is a visual reference for the ages of their courage and devotion to their country.

The Three Servicemen Statue South non-profit organization was created to raise the necessary funds to bring this one-of-kind detail of the original sculpture to Apalachicola, Florida. The Three Soldiers, Detail bronze sculpture, made from part of the original molds, will be set on a black granite pedestal and will be the centerpiece of Apalachicola's Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Three Servicemen Statue South, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization. Founder and President is Jimmy G. Mosconis.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings!  I hope this finds everyone well.  In lieu of our regular monthly member meeting, on the 19th of June we had our first public meeting pertaining to the Traveling Wall coming to Tallahassee.  There was great response from the community.  About 20 people showed up, and several of them represented community organizations that are interested in becoming involved.  I am also getting calls from various people who want to help.  I feel that we have made a great start.  We need to persist, and move forward.   Thanks to all who offered their services.

Our July member meeting will be about planning for our upcoming Veterans Day activities (the Traveling Wall plus separate Chapter 96 anniversary activities).  I have also invited the the community to participate in this meeting.

July 2008

We need to set up our Traveling Wall committee chairs.  The committees that have been identified (so far) are:  (1) Traveling Wall set-up and take-down, (2) opening and closing ceremonies (including color guards), (3) locator service, i.e. using computers or printed indexes to help find specific names [also referred to by some of the volunteers as "docents"], (4) reading of the names, (5) counseling, and (6) 24-hour-a-day security.  If you want to be involved in any of these, call me.  If you have any thing that needs to come before the board please do so at our first meeting of the month.  We are still way-short of funds to put this endeavor together, so keep that in mind.  If you know folks who can help, don't be afraid to ask them.

Hootch renovations are proceeding.  T
he carpet has been taken out (to be replaced by tile), the walls have been painted on the inside, and the outside has been pressure washed and is ready to paint if it ever quits raining.  Thanks to all who showed for the work day.  The work was done fast and efficiently.  We started at 8:00 a.m. and were on our way out the door at 11:30 a.m.

The Chapter 96 board of directors has approved a Chapter "uniform" for those who care to dress for the occasion of the upcoming events and Malcolm Hill has ordered jungle fatigues from an advertisement in the VVA Veteran.  They are quite nice.  Lets get on board with this so we look sharp this Veterans Day.

Please keep in mind those who serve today, to protect our way of life and freedom.
Lest we forget
Rick Clevenger

Traveling Wall, June Public Meeting Notes

The Hootch carpet had been removed.  The bare plywood floor is somewhat ugly. <grin>  The walls were freshly painted a matte beige and were bare as well.  All of our art and memorabilia, the bookcase, the cabinets, the display case... even the colors, were cleared away.  (At least the colors will back in place for the next meeting.)

But who would show up?  The answer came soon after the meeting started and those present introduced themselves and any organizations they were there to represent.
Those present signed in and in some cases identified their organizational affiliations and/or interest in certain types of tasks.  Of course the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary was represented.  (Post 13 has allocated a substantial donation for the Traveling Wall.)  But others including the Knights of Columbus and the Daughters of the American Revolution San Luis Chapter, were rather less anticipated.  It was soon clear that there were two main "types" present: (1) those who came to sign up for some relatively finite task as an individual, and (2) those who came offering support from other organizations.  The meeting was started with Rick elaborating on some of the tasks laid out and giving a broad outline of ideas about how to organize to fulfill them.  At our next meeting on July 17th we expect in some ways to have to go back over ground already covered, but also to move on to establishing operational committees, naming persons to chair them, and beginning to get procedures established and information flowing in an organized manner.

A special web site has been set up just for the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall for its stay at Fred O. Drake Jr. Park at Lake Ella.  It can be accessed at:  http://vva96.org/wall.htm
