FLOOD!

Aw!  It wasn't so bad.  I mean... to quote Francis Scott Key, "our flag was still there" and so was the Hootch; but flooding from Tropical Storm Fay was close-enough of a call to for us to pause and reflect.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Time marches on...  We are within sixty days and counting down for the Traveling Wall and our anniversaries... 25 years as a VVA chapter, 20 years in the Hootch.  There's still lots of work to be done.  If you feel inclined to serve on any of the Traveling Wall committees or want to help with the plans for our anniversary at the Hootch, step up and be counted.

Tropical Storm Fay left the area around Lake Ella, including the grounds around the Hootch, a mess.  We need to have another work day, just to concentrate on the outside and grounds.  I think all of the cleanup could be accomplished in four or five hours, if we have five or six people show up.  Stay tuned for a date to be announced.

If you missed the benefit show at the Comedy Zone on September 3rd, you missed a good time.  It was a hoot!  Joe West not only donated his time as a comedian to help raise funds for the Traveling Wall, but he also worked hard pushing ticket sales.  Thank you, Joe... for all you did.  The final total isn't in yet, but the approximate total raised by this event was $1,300.

TRAVELING WALL UPDATE

"Well" as they say... "that's a deep subject... a hole in the ground..." and speaking of holes in the ground, the city's got a contractor going around Fred Drake Park digging a deep hole, piling landscaping blocks in it, and making a "decorative wall" that generally follows the outline of the peninsula except that, with no purpose discernible to me, its southern ends loop in towards each other and almost meet at the central sidewalk near the street.  This landscaping wall stands anywhere from about a foot to eighteen inches or more above existing grade when capped, and cuts right through where the left wing of the Traveling Wall is slated to stand.

The photo to the left shows the landscaping wall in the area of concern, in a mostly incomplete state, as-yet lacking the top three courses of stone. While some may extol the virtues of C-4, we hear that just wouldn't be nice.

This too shall pass... Rick is discussing our options with the Tallahassee Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs.
